The Golden Globes is one of the most star-studded and prestigious awards ceremonies on the calendar and the nominations for the 2016 ceremony have been announced.

Carol

Carol

Carol leads the way with five nominations, including Best Motion Picture Drama, Best Director and two nods in Best Actress - Drama for Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. The co-stars are set to go head to head as they have both been recognised for their work.

The Best Actress - Drama category is a tough one as Brie Larson, Saoirse Ronan, and Alicia Vikander have also been nominated for Room, Brooklyn, and The Danish Girl. There was a double nomination for Vikander as she also picked up a Best Supporting Actress nod for her work in the fantastic Ex Machina. However, Ex Machina was overlooked in all the other major categories.

The Big Short, The Revenant and Steve Jobs followed close behind Carol with four nominations apiece.

To see Carol, The Revenant, Room, and Spotlight in the mix for Best Motion Picture Drama comes as no surprise, but Mad Max: Fury Road is also in there - further strengthening the campaign for an Oscar nod in this Best Picture category.

In fact, Mad Max: Fury Road picked up two nominations as George Miller was recognised in the Best Director category alongside Todd Haynes, Tom McCarthy, Ridley Scott, and Alejandro González Iñárritu for Carol, Spotlight, The Martian, and The Revenant.

There was one big surprise in the Best Actor - Drama category as Johnny Depp was overlooked for his performance in Black Mass - despite picking up an SAG nomination only yesterday.

Leonardo DiCaprio leads the way in the category for his performance in The Revenant, while Eddie Redmayne is nominated for the second year running of his performance in the Danish Girl. Bryan Cranston, Michael Fassbender, and Will Smith complete the list for Trumbo, Steve Jobs, and Concussion.

The Big Short leads the way in the Best Picture - Musical/Comedy category and is nomination alongside Joy, Spy, Trainwreck, and The Martian.

The Big Short picked up two more nominations in Best Actor - Musical/Comedy for Christian Bale and Steve Carell. Matt Damon, Mark Ruffalo, and Al Pacino complete the list for their work in The Martian, Infinitely Polar Bear, and Danny Collins.

Pixar's Inside Out is the heavy favourite for the Best Animation Feature gong and has been nominated alongside The Good Dinosaur, The Peanuts Movie, Shaun the Sheep Movie, and Anomalisa
