Monsters University

Monsters University

Monsters University is the latest Pixar movie and is set to hit the big screen this week.

Pixar have made some real animation movie gems over the years - Monsters University promises to be another - as we as some unforgettable characters.

So to celebrate we take a look at some of the best and most popular characters since Pixar burst onto cinema screens back in 1995.

- Buzz Lightyear

'To infinity... and beyond' is one of the most iconic lines in cinema history and was uttered for the first time back in 1995 when Toy Story hit the big screen.

Buzz is a space ranger hero who causes havoc in the bedroom of Andy in the first film as he begins to take the place of Woody as the young boy's favourite toy.

But with the help of the other toys Buzz learns that he doesn't have to fight alone and develops a great partnership with Woody.

Tim Allen is the actor that brings Buzz to life and the character appeared in two more very successful films.

- Mike Wazowski

It was back in 2001 and Monsters Inc that we were introduced to Mike Wazowski for the very first time.

While he is technically a sidekick for Sulley he has become a scene stealer thanks to the wonderful work of Billy Crystal.

When we first meet Mike he works for Monsters Inc, where the city's power is generated by scaring children.

In the new movie we see Mike attending university where he dreams of becoming a scarer himself.

- Dory

Finding Nemo is one of the most successful Pixar movies of all time - hard to believe that it was released back in 2003 and is now ten years old.

Dory is a Pacific regal blue tang with a short memory who finds herself on the adventure of a lifetime.

Marlin enlists Dory's 'help' to find his son after he is captured by a scuba diver.

Dory could have been one of those incredibly annoying characters but because of the fantastic voice work of Ellen DeGeneres she is one of the most loved Pixar creations.

- James P. "Sulley" Sullivan

Of course you can't talk about Mike without mentioning Sulley - as they are one of the best film partnerships of all time.

Sulley is also working at Monsters Inc when we first meet him as a scarer. But when he accidentally lets a human child into the monster world his life is turned upside down.

Sulley may be the best scarer but he is a monster with a heart of gold. He is brought to life by John Goodman and his work with Billy Crystal have made them a fantastic double act.

In Monsters University we see Sulley as he follows in his father's footsteps to become a scarer. But everything doesn't go to plan and he finds himself teaming up with Mike Wazowski.

- Woody

Woody is another iconic character of the Pixar universe and we were introduced to him for the first time back in 1995.

Woody is Andy's favourite toy and is the leader of the toys in the bedroom... but all that is put in jeopardy when Buzz Lightyear arrives with his fancy gadgets and gizmos.

Throughout the first film we see Woody and Buzz join forces to battle against toy destroyer Sid.

Since then we have seen Woody and Buzz lead the toys in many adventures - including spending some time in a daycare centre.

- Merida

Brave hit the big screen last summer and we were introduced to Merida for the first time; the first ever female lead character in a Pixar movie.

Merida is a free-spirited princess who has no interest in following the path that is expected of her from her mother.

Skilled with a bow and arrow and a sword Merida wants to follow her own path in life rather than the one that her mother has in mind for her.

But when she uses magic to try and change her mother's mind everything goes wrong... but it does bring mother and daughter closer together.

Other honourable mentions include Roz, Edna Mode, Nemo, Boo, Remy, Carl and Mr Incredible.

Monsters University is released 12th July
