Locke

Locke

Starring: Tom Hardy

Director: Steven Knight

Rating: 4/5

Tom Hardy has taken on some fascinating roles in recent years, and his new role sees him continue this fine tradition.

Locke sees Hardy team up with up director Steven Knight for the very first time in what is a terrific solo performance for the fantastic actor.

Ivan Locke has worked hard to craft a good life for himself. Tonight, that life will collapse around him.

On the eve of the biggest challenge of his career, Ivan receives a phone call that sets in motion a series of events that will unravel his family, job, and soul.

On paper a film about a man driving down he motorway doesn’t sound that riveting, but Locke does exactly that and is gripping from start to finish.

The reason that this film is such a riveting watch is because of the central performance from Hardy. He has always been a great actor, but he really does show that with this role as he is on his own for the entire duration of the film.

Hardy never leaves the car and while he may not have anyone to play off he delivers a powerful, raw and emotional performance.

This really is a study of how fantastic minimalist cinema can be there are no other characters, not special effects and no dramatic car chases, and yet it is one of the most riveting movies that I have watched all year.

This look at themes of love, infidelity, impending fatherhood and the complexity of life in general: one rash decision from Locke sees his life turned upside down.

This is a movie that will really help put director Steven Knight on the map as he has written and directed a complex, exciting and emotional film set inside the confines a car.

But Hardy really is the film’s driving force and I can’t convey to you just how fine a central performance this is. Hardy really is one of the most exciting acting talents working at the moment, and this film will only help cement that reputation.
