The Descendants

The Descendants

The Descendants and The Artist were the two major winners at last nights Golden Globes and indicated they will be the two movies that will be battling it out at the Oscars.

The biggest Hollywood names graced the red carpet last night for the first major indicator as to which movies could well waltz away with the Oscars.

The Descendants and The Artist, both of which have enjoyed huge critical success, shared the Best Picture prizes as The Descendants took Best Motion Picture Drama while The Artist took Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy.

George Clooney picked up the best actor gong, could this be the year he picks up the Oscar? While Jean Dujardin picked up Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy.

There was no surprise in the Best Actress category as Meryl Streep took the award for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

It was biopics all the way in the actress categories and Michelle Williams who took the musical/comedy gong.

There was more awards success of Martin Scorsese as he won Best Director for his work on Hugo, which was also nominated for Best Picture.

There was some British success last night as Christopher Plummer won Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Beginners.

Octavia Spencer was recognised for her performance in the superb The Help as she won Best Supporting Actress.

Ricky Gervais was once again on presenting duties for the third year running.

And while he was on top form he made fun of the awards themselves rather than the people sitting in the audience, unlike twelve months ago, however Kim Kardashian and Justin Bieber didn't escape.
