42 has claimed the top spot at the U.S. box office and ended the one week reign of horror film Evil Dead.

42 is a biopic about Jackie Robinson and starred Chadwick Boseman and Harrison Ford while Brian Helgeland is in the director's chair.

The movie took $27.2 million in its opening weekend to comfortably take the #1 spot.

Scary Movie 5 was another new entry as it opened at number 2 with $15.1 million.

It is the first film in the horror/spoof franchise since 2006 and sees Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen on the cast list.

The Croods was a none mover this week at three while G.I. Joe: Retaliation was down two at four.

Evil Dead was the biggest faller this week as it dropped four place to round of the top five.

Jurassic Park 3D and Olympus Has Fallen were both down two at six and seven while Oz The Great And Powerful was down one at eight.

Tyler Perry's Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counsellor slipped three place to nine while The Place Beyond the Pines was the only climber as it was up three to ten.
