Robert Zemeckis's A Christmas Carol has toppled Michael Jackson's This Is It to top the U.S. box office.

In it's opening weekend the movie, which sees Jim Carrey voice the main character of Scrooge, the movie grossed $31 million to comfortably take the top spot.

Charles Dickens' timeless tale of an old miser who must face Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet-to-Come, as they help to bring kindness to his otherwise cold heart.

The Ghosts remind him of the man he used to be, the hard truth of what the world is today, and what will happen if he does not strive to be a better man

This Is It fell to number two after just a week at number one. The top five was cluttered with new entries as George Clooney's The Men Who Stare At Goats  opened at three.

And paranormal movies proved to be popular this week as The Fourth Kind opened at four while Paranormal Activity fell three places from two to five.

The Box was the fourth new entry inside the top ten at six. While this week's biggest faller came in the form of Law Abiding Citizen which fell five places.
