Channing Tatum has revealed that he enjoys making romance movies as they are more exciting than action films.

The G.I. Joe actor teams up with Amanda Seyfried next week for Dear John, a movie which topped the American box office when it was released earlier this year.

The movie is an adaptation of the novel by Nicholas Sparks, who penned The Notebook.

Speaking to MSN.com the actor said: "I don't know if it's a challenge - I find it more exciting. I don't like action movies, they're not that interesting - although they're fun to do for the physical element of it, I guess."

He added: "But the really fun stuff they don't even let you do, like running into an exploding building, they won't let you do that.

"There's too much money riding on you not getting hurt and so they don't let you do the really fun things.

"But yes, there's something absolutely exhilarating and, I don't want to call it difficult because it's not really difficult when you do it right... like, just sitting on the beach with someone and having a real conversation, there's something really exhilarating about that, and just opening up being really honest about how you'd be feeling at that age."

And it won't be long until we see Tatum back on the big screen as he stars in The Eagle of the Ninth alongside Mark Strong and Jamie Bell.

Directed by Kevin Macdonald the movie is set in Roman-ruled Britain and follows a young Roman soldier who endeavours to honour his father's memory by finding his lost legion's golden emblem.

Dear John is released 14th April.
