E.T.

The house featured in E.T. The Extra Terrestrial has been spared after California wildfires forced the family currently living there to evacuate.

Tony Piwowar and his son stayed behind to fight the flames and it appears their perseverance has paid off.

The home, where Drew Barrymore's character and her brothers hid an alien in Steven Spielberg's movie, is no longer in immediate danger.

Piwowar pushed the blaze back and saved his home.

But the after effects of the fire, which has been burning through the north edge of Los Angeles and causing $21 million (£14 million) in damages since last week (ends28Aug09), is clear to see.

He says, "My back yard and the hill behind looks like the surface of the moon."

The fire has burned through an area the size of Chicago, Illinois.
