Ian McKellan says that The Hobbit will be mind-blowing.

The actor is set to reprise the role of Gandalf at the end of the year as Peter Jackson takes us back to Middle Earth for the first time in almost a decade.

And McKellan hints at just how exciting a role the latest Tolkien adaptation promises to be.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly the actor said: "A lot of people weren't even born when we were filming Lord Of The Rings and only know the movies from watching them on DVD.

"They'll see Middle-earth on the big screen in The Hobbit, and I guarantee there will be a lot of minds blown wide apart."

McKellan will be joined on the cast list by Andy Serkis, Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett and Elijah Wood, who will all be reprising roles.

While Martin Freeman will take over the role of Bilbo Baggins and Richard Armitage and Luke Evans are just some of the new faces.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is released 14th December.
