James McAvoy has revealed that he would love to return to the character of Charles Xavier - hinting that he would like to make a further two movies.

The British actor took over the role of Xavier from Patrick Stewart in X-Men: First Class - which is set back in the sixties as a young Charles is grappling to understand his power.

The movie has been a hit with the critics and has topped the U.S. box office - ending the reign of The Hangover Part II.

Speaking to the Los Angeles Time the actor said: "Ideally you have a story arc that lasts three movies and at the end of the third it leaves you ready for the story in X-Men 1.

"It would be nice to explore things in two more films. In this one, Magneto has gone through his major metamorphosis; he kind of found himself."

And while he would love to reprise his role the actor admits that he is not sure whether a second movie will go ahead.

"All I know is that if this one makes some money, they will definitely want to make another one. We've had pretty strong critical reaction thus far.

"I don't know if they'd make it just on the back of that, if they didn't make the kind of money they hope for.

"I don't know, but I can't see them making it just on that. I just hope that, if it happens, they make it because they found a story they like rather than making it just because there's more money to be made.

"I've been lucky that, even though I've done a couple of bad or silly movies in the past, that's the way they ended up; the studios made them because they were passionate about them.

"I'd hate to be in something that started right off as something cynical."

It's been a very successful year for McAvoy after lending his voice to hit animation movie Gnomeo and Juliet at the beginning of the year.

It's a change of pace later this summer for the actor when he stars in the Robert Redford directed The Conspirator - which follows the aftermath of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

X-Men: First Class is out now.
