John Turturro is focusing on Italian film projects to add balance to his life.

When you get a little older, you have a complicated relationship with your other home country. Being an American you realise how anglified you are; it's nice to find a little balance in your life.

The Hollywood actor, writer and director - who was born in Brooklyn, New York to Italian parents - is currently working on the Italy-themed projects to help him investigate his ancestry.

He said: "When you get a little older, you have a complicated relationship with your other home country. Being an American you realise how anglified you are; it's nice to find a little balance in your life."

Next week the 'Sicilian' star will start filming a documentary on Neopolitan song - traditional music from the area - in conjunction with tourist boards in Italy's southern Campania region and the Instituto Luce.

The 52-year-old actor explained: "It will investigate the longevity of the style and why it's traveled so widely.

"It will be a mix of past and modern-day singers with a focus on playing up the irony rather than the sentimentality."

Next year, John plans to direct a stage adaptation of a series of short 'Italian Folktales' produced by Teatro Stabile di Torino.

Following this, he will start work directing and starring in his movie 'Souls of Naples'.

The film will be an adaptation of Edoardo De Filippo's famous Neapolitan play 'Questi Fantasmi', which John had previously directed on stage in Naples and New York.
