Johnny Depp has revealed that he used Jonathan Frid's performance as Barnabus Collins as inspiration for his own role.

Depp takes on the role of vampire Barnabus in Tim Burton's re-telling of the popular sixties TV series in while Frid played the same role.

And Depp admits that no matter how he looked at developing his character he just kept coming back to Frid's interpretation.

Speaking to Flicks and Bits the actor said: "Every angle I tried, I kept coming back to Jonathan Frid's iconic performance.

"Approaching Barnabas, even in the early days of trying to explore the possibilities of the character, no matter where you went in your head, if you tried to veer away from the original Jonathan Frid character, it was apparent to both Tim and myself that it had to be rooted in Jonathan Frid's character of Barnabas. It just had to be."

Dark Shadows is the first time that Depp and Burton have worked together since Alice In Wonderland and the movie marks their eighth collaboration.

Depp teams up with Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green and Helena Bonham Carter in the movie and it has opened at number two at the U.S. box office behind The Avengers.

Dark Shadows is out now.
