Kelly Macdonald has revealed that it was 'scary' to voice the leading character in Brave.

Brave is the latest project from animation giants Pixar and Princess Merida is the first ever lead female character.

Speaking to The Press Association the actress said: "I kind of didn't realise until quite recently that I was the first female - like way after I'd started my voice recordings and everything.

"I'm delighted but it's kind of scary."

Brave also has Emma Thompson, Kevin McKidd, Robbie Coltrane and Julie Walters on the cast list.

Macdonald has enjoyed huge TV success this year with Boardwalk Empire but she will next be seen on the big screen in The Decoy Bride, which also stars David Tennant.

Pixar has enjoyed huge success in recent years with the $1 billion hit Toy Story 3 and this year Cars 2 has also performed well at the box office.

Brave is released 17th August 2012.
