Meryl Streep has joked that half of America is mad that she won the Best Actress Oscar on Sunday night.

Streep took home the gong for her depiction of Margaret Thatcher in movie The Iron Lady.

And while the actress has had a whole host of nominations over the years this was her first Oscar win since Sophie's Choice back in 1982.

When Entertainment Tonight asked her how she felt about her Oscar win she said: "Sadly, I had been reading the blogs in the awards run-up and I had a fairly full sense of how the momentum was going...

"I felt that, 'Oh, God, half of America is really mad now that I won'."

Streep was the hot favourite for the award before Christmas but in the week running up to the ceremony some believed that Viola Davis could just pip her to the post for her performance in The Help.

But it was not to be as Streep saw off competition from Davis, Glenn Close, Michelle Williams and Rooney Mara.
