Rio

Rio has stormed to the top of the U.S. box office - comfortably holding off the challenge from horror movie Scream 4.

Directed by Carlos Saldanha the movie brings together an all star voice cast that includes Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway and Jamie Foxx.

When Blu, a domesticated macaw from small-town Minnesota, meets the fiercely independent Jewel, he takes off on an adventure to Rio de Janeiro with this bird of his dreams.

The movie took $40 million in the opening weekend to race to the top of the box office.

It's been over a decade since a Scream movie graced the big screen but this weekend saw Wes Craven return to the director's chair with Scream 4.

The movie took $19.3 million and had to settle for second while Hop, last week's number one, slipped to three.

Comedy Arthur was one of this week's biggest fallers as it dropped four to finish at six at the end of the weekend.

Insidious was down two while Source Code was down one at eight. The third and final new entry came in the form of The Conspirator, which sees Robert Redford back in the director's chair.

The movie follows the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and the movie opened this weekend at number nine.
