Shrek Forever After has toppled Iron Man 2 at the top of the U.S. box office as the it grabs the top spot.

The movie is the fifth film in the animated franchise and took $71.2 million to end Iron Man 2's reign.

Mike Myers is back as the voice of Shrek, who has becomes bored and domesticated. Shrek makes a pact with deal-maker Rumpelstiltskin to get back to feeling like a real ogre again.

But when he's duped and sent to a twisted version of Far Far Away, where Rumpelstiltskin is king, ogres are hunted, and he and Fiona have never met, he sets out to restore his world and reclaim his true love.

Iron Man 2 had to settle for second spot this week and has so far grossed $251 million in the States alone.

There was a one place drop for Robin Hood as the Ridley Scott/Russell Crowe collaboration ended the weekend at number three.

Letters To Juliet and just Wright both dropped just a single place to round off the top five at four and five.

A second new entry was in at six in the form of MacGruber, which stars Will Forte, Kristen Wiig, Ryan Phillippe and Val Kilmer.

Date Night held onto seventh spot while A Nightmare on Elm Street fell two from six to this week's number eight.

This week's biggest faller was How To train Your Dragon, another Dreamworks project, as it dropped three places.

Kites was the third and final new entry in at ten.
