Disney’s hair-raising 3D comedy adventure ‘Tangled’ is a smash hit at the UK box office taking a magical £5.1 million over the opening weekend.

Disney’s 50th animated film is firmly in the record books as the highest opening weekend ever for Walt Disney Animation Studios.

‘Tangled’ is the 4th biggest animated opening in Disney’s history behind Toy Story 3:£11.5m, Monsters Inc :£6.5m and Up:£6.4m, and the 10th highest animated opening in UK history.

In the US, Tangled was the highest opening film ever for Walt Disney Animation Studios and the second biggest Thanksgiving weekend opener behind Disney Pixar’s own Toy Story 2.

The long-haired Princess Rapunzel has spent her entire life in a tower, but when she falls in love with a bandit who was passing by she must venture into the outside world for the first time to find him.

Last Week’s number one The King’s Speech fell just a single place to number two - taking a further £3.6 million. Black Swan was also down a single place at number three.

The Mechanic was the second of four new entries inside the top ten this week at number four as Jason Statham returns to the big screen alongside Ben Foster.

And comedy The Dilemma rounded off the top five after slipping one place for last week’s number four.

The Green Hornet was one of this week’s biggest fallers as it dropped three places from three to number six.

The latest movie from Clint Eastwood, Hereafter, sees him reunite with his Invictus leading man Matt Damon and it opened at number seven.

Gulliver’s Travels and 127 Hours were the other three place fallers this weekend as they finished at eight and nine.

The fourth and final new entry, which came in the form of How Do You Know, rounded off the top ten.
