The Hunger Games has lived up to all it's hype as it took $155 million in it's opening weekend to top the U.S. box office.

Director Gary Ross has brought the first instalment of the Suzanne Collins trilogy to the big screen and it has become the third biggest movie debut of all time.

Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence takes on the role of heroine Katniss Everdeen while Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth are also on the cast list.

21 Jump Street slid down a place to number two as it took another $21.3 million this weekend.

Former number one Dr Suess' The Lorax slipped on place to three while JOnh Carter was also down one at number four.

War movie Act Of Valor, which is also a former number one, was the only none mover on the chart this week as it remained at number five.

Project X was a two place faller as it dropped to number six while A Thousand Word fell from six to number seven.

October Baby was the second and final new entry on the chart this week as it opened at number eight.

Safe House and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island were both down two as they wrapped up the top ten at nine and ten.
