Dr Seuss' The Lorax put in a fine performance at the American box office in it's first weekend of release as it took $70.7 million.

The movie sees Zac Efron and Taylor Swift team up to lend their voice to the characters and they have scored a #1 smash hit.

The movie follows a 12-year-old boy who searches for the one thing that will enable him to win the affection of the girl of his dreams.

To find it he must discover the story of the Lorax, the grumpy yet charming creature who fights to protect his world.

Project X was the second and final new entry inside the top ten this week but it came in way back at number two.

The movie is produced by The Hangover filmmaker Todd Philips and took $20.7 million in it's opening weekend.

Last week's number one Act of Valor slid two place to this week's number three while Safe House stayed put at number four.

Tyler Perry's Good Deeds completed the top five as it fell three places from last week's number two.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island fell three places to six while The Vow was also down two at seven.

There was a single place drop for This Mean War at eight while Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance was down three at six.

After it's huge Oscar win last weekend The Artist moves up three places to round off the top ten at ten.
