The Possession

The Possession has ended the fortnight reign of action movie The Expendables 2 and claimed the top spot at the U.S. box office.

The movie saw Ole Bornedal return to the director's chair and it took $17.7 million in its opening weekend to comfortably see off the competition.

And the competition came in form of John Hillcoat's gangster movie that stars Tom Hardy and Shia LaBeouf.

It was the second and final new entry inside the top ten this week as it opened at number two taking $9.6 million.

The Expendables 2 was down two places this week at number three while The Bourne Legacy was also down two places at four.

ParaNorman was also a two place faller as he rounded off the top five at number five.

The Odd Life of Timothy Green stayed put at six while The Dark Knight Rises was down from five to seven this week.

Comedy movie The Campaign was the biggest faller this week as it dropped four places from four to wight while 2016: Obama's America was down two at nine.

Hope Springs, which stars Meryl Street and Tommy Lee Jones, fell just a single place to round off the top ten.
