The Sweeney

The Sweeney

The Sweeney has toppled Dredd from the top of the UK box office as it stormed to the #1 spot after it's first weekend on release.

The movie is a modern day interpretation of the popular TV show and sees Ray Winstone and Ben Drew join forces to play characters Regan and Carter.

The movie, which is directed by Nick Love, took over £1.5 million over the weekend to comfortably hold off the challenge from animation movie ParaNorman.

ParaNorman had to settle for second as it brings together a great voice cast that includes Anna Kendrick and Christopher Mintz-Plasse.

Period drama Anna Karenina was a none-mover at three while Lawless dropped two places to this week's number four.

After just a week at the top for Dredd the action flick dropped four places to round off the top five.

Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones have joined forces for comedy Hope Springs and it was the final new entry on the chart this week at number six.

Brave was down two at seven while Total Recall suffered a four place drop at nine.

The Possession, which is doing well at the U.S. box office, was down three at nine while Ted has down three from seven to ten.
