Winona Ryder has revealed that she took on the role of Spock's mother in the new Star Trek movie because she was inspired by Marlon Brando's appearance in Superman.

Ryder appears briefly in the movie as Spock's human mother Amanda Grayson who helps her son cope with his dual heritage of half human half Vulcan.

In an interview with Empire the actress said:"I really don't have much more than a cameo [in Star Trek]. I was king of thinking I'd be like Marlon Brando in Superman. Not that I'd ever compare myself to Brando!"

"Because of the huge Trekkie culture I wasn't given a script. "I'd get picked up in the morning and have no idea where I was going.

"Even doing Alien, those films don't have anything like the kind of fans that Star Trek does."

Star Trek has enjoyed massive success at the box office this summer so far grossing over $301 million at the global box office landing the number one spot in the US and UK.
