The Revenant has been surrounded in awards whispers for quite some time and it was no surprise to see it in the mix when the nominations were announced on Thursday.

The movie sees Iñárritu back in the director's chair for the first time since Birdman and he was nominated for Best Director. The movie also picked up nods for Best Motion Picture Drama - Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama, and Best Original Score.

Speaking about the nomination, the filmmaker said: "I can't believe this time last year we were in Calgary shooting The Revenant, and right now I'm in London and just heard the good news! I'm thrilled for our incredible cast and crew. Any nominations for this film are an acknowledgement of them, their hard work and great passion.

"I'm especially happy for Leo, his emotional performance and what he does is truly remarkable. This film is very personal for me; so I think I will have a drink with my daughter tonight to toast to everyone who was a part of it. Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, this is very nice."

This nomination success of Iñárritu comes a year after Birdman was also nominated for four awards - eventually walking away with just Best Screenplay.

It has been a great week for The Revenant as DiCaprio was also nominated at the Screen Actors Guild Awards for his central performance as frontiersman Hugh Glass.

Set in the 1820s, the movie follows Glass as he sets out for redemption after being left for dead after a bear mauling.

We won't discover which films and actors will be in the Oscar mix, but I strongly suspect that The Revenant, Iñárritu, and DiCaprio will be in the running for the major gongs.

The Revenant is released 15th January 2016. And the Golden Globe winners will be announced 10th January 2016.
