Benedict Cumberbatch

Benedict Cumberbatch is in talks for the role of Doctor Strange in the latest film from Marvel.

Cumberbatch had been linked to the role earlier this year, but was believed to be out of the running due to this theatre commitments - he is set to star in a production of Hamlet.

However, Deadline have reported that Cumberbatch is the choice of Marvel Studios, and now the two parties are believed to be in final negotiations about the role and the movie.

Joaquin Phoenix had been in talks for the role before he walked away, and the likes of Tom Hardy and Jared Leto have all been linked to the film over the last few weeks.

Scott Derrickson is set to be in the director's chair for the film, while Jon Spaihts has penned the screenplay for the film.

Cumberbatch is no stranger to the blockbuster - having taken on the role of Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness - but Doctor Strange would be the biggest film role of his career to date.

Doctor Strange is one of the new Marvel franchises and is set to be part of Phase Three of Marvel films - Phase Three will be kicked off next summer by Ant Man. Doctor Strange is expected to be released in the summer of 2016.

As for Cumberbatch, he will be back on the big screen next month as he takes on the role of Alan Turing in The Imitation Game.

The Imitation Game has already been whipping up a storm on the festival circuit and it is already being tipped as a possible Oscar contender.

Cumberbatch will also be back as Smaug in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, he has completed work on Black Mass, and lent his voice to Penguins of Madagascar and Magik.
