Cumberbatch was one of the actors linked to a role in the highly anticipated film, but seemed to have lost out.

However, the actor appears to have added new fuel to the fire when he was asked about the project on Graham Norton last night.

Instead of denying his involvement, the actor told Norton: "No comment."

He then went on to add: "I went to the set. It was incredible. I probably shouldn't be saying these things."

Star Wars: Episode VII would not be the first time that Cumberbatch has worked with director J.J. Abrams, after starring as Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness.

While Cumberbatch and Star Wars still remains a bit of a mystery, he will be back on the big screen next month with his new movie The Imitation Game.

The Imitation Game sees the actor take on the role of Alan Turing as the film follows his role in the breaking of the Enigma Code during the Second World War.

The movie has been whipping up a storm on the festival circuit in recent weeks: the film and Cumberbatch's central performance are already being tipped as major Oscar contenders.

Cumberbatch will also be back as Smaug in The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies and will star in Black Mass alongside Johnny Depp.

The Imitation Game is released 14th November.
