Captain America: Civil War

Civil War has been a box office smash since it was released three weeks ago and has now grossed over $981 million at the global box office.

By doing so, it has leapfrogged Zootropolis, pushing the Disney film down into second place with a worldwide gross of $971 million.

Civil War looks on course to become the first film of 2016 to gross over $1 billion - that looks set to happen over the weekend. It would also be the fourth Marvel film to do so; following in the footsteps of Avengers Assemble, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Iron Man 3.

Civil War is the third film in the Captain America franchise and the first since the critical and commercial success of The Winter Solider two years ago.

However, Civil War has been a huge critical hit and an even bigger box office success than its predecessor. It is already the most successful Captain America film in the series and has cemented the franchise as one of Marvel's big hitters.

The success of Civil War means more success of Disney, which has three of the top five highest-grossing films of the year; Zootropolis and The Jungle Book being the other two.

Civil War leads the way with $981 million, Zootropolis on $971 million, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has taken $870 million, The Jungle Book has $832 million and Deadpool is fifth with $762 million.

Civil War kicks off Phase 3 of Marvel films and is the first of two movies to be released this year; the second coming in the form of Doctor Strange in the autumn. Civil War will be Marvel's biggest box office success this year.

We will not see Captain America back on the big screen until Avengers: Infinity War. The two movies will be filmed back to back at the beginning of next year.

Civil War filmmakers, Anthony and Joe Russo will take over the Avengers director's chair from Joss Whedon for the first time.

Captain America: Civil War is out now.
