Carol

Carol is a movie that has already whipped up a storm at the Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the prestigious Palme d'Or and now it is to receive a Gala Screening in London.

The movie will feature as the Festival's American Express Gala, which will also be the UK premiere for the Todd Haynes directed film.

Carol is based on the novel The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith and see Haynes back in the director's chair for the first time since I'm Not There back in 2007. Oscar winner Cate Blanchett is set to take on the title role in the film, which will reunite her with the filmmaker for the first time since I'm Not There.

Speaking about the film being part of the BFI London Film Festival, the director said: "We are all extremely proud to be presenting the UK premiere of Carol at the BFI London Film Festival, a film adaptation which had its roots in Britain, and a festival which has meant a tremendous amount to me personally over the years."

Rooney Mara will take on the other lead role in the film and she and Blanchett are joined on the cast list by Kyle Chandler and Sara Paulson.

While Carol is yet to hit the big screen, it is a movie that is already surrounded in Oscar whispers - Blanchett and Mara are both expected to be in the mix for their central performances. Should both women be nominated for Best Actress, then they would go head to head.

A young woman in her 20s, Therese Belivet (Mara) is a clerk working in a Manhattan department store and dreaming of a more fulfilling life when she meets Carol (Blanchett), an alluring woman trapped in a loveless, convenient marriage. As an immediate connection sparks between them, the innocence of their first encounter dims and their connection deepens.

While Carol breaks free from the confines of marriage, her husband (Chandler) threatens her competence as a mother when Carol's involvement with Therese and close relationship with her best friend Abby (Paulson) comes to light. As Carol leaves the comfort of home to travel with Therese, an internal journey of self-discovery coincides with her new sense of space.

Suffragette and Steve Jobs are the two movies that have already been announced and will open and close this year's festival.

The 59th BFI London Film Festival in partnership with American Express® runs from Wednesday 7 October-Sunday 18 October 2015. Carol is released nationwide on 27th November.
