Cars 3 is set to hit the big screen next year and will see Brian Fee in the director's chair. It is the first film in the series since Cars 2 back in 2011.

Lasseter joint directed the first film, which was released back in 2006, and has talked about what fans can expect from the upcoming film.

Speaking to EW, Lasseter said: "Lightning McQueen, he's awesome. We've got some great new characters, some great racing in it. It's a very emotional story.

"It's a little bit more akin to Cars 1, where you get into a deep emotion with him. It's really a special story. It's very emotional and his relationship with Doc Hudson, and his memory of Doc Hudson."

No official cast list has yet been announced for the film, but Owen Wilson and Larry the Cable Guy are expected to return as Lightning McQueen and Mater - characters that have been in the franchise since the beginning.

So far, the first two movies have grossed over $1 billion at the box office - Cars took $462 million and Cars 2 grossed $599.9 million five years later.

Cars 3 will mark the feature film directorial debut for Brian Fee but he is no stranger to the world of Pixar with storyboard artist credits on Cars 2, Wall-E and Ratatouille in recent years.

The first concept art for Cars 3 was unveiled earlier this month but we are going to have to wait until 2017 for the film to hit the big screen.

Cars 3 is released 16th June 2017.
