Cynthia Nixon is to star in 'The Evening Hour'.

Nixon has joined the indie drama will star as estranged mother Ruby whose son Cole Freeman - played by newcomer Michael Trotter - is a drug dealer who finds redemption.

The Hurt Locker's Brian Geraghty and The Divide's Marin Ireland will also star in the film, which is set in a small West Virginia mining town in the foothills of Appalachia.

The movie is an adaptation of Carter Sickels' 2012 novel of the same name, and the book tells the story of Cole who is inspired to fix his life and relationships when Ruby returns home after a long absence and becomes a catalyst for change in his life.

Braden King is directing the project and shooting is scheduled to start in the summer.

Cynthia - who has children Samantha, 19, and Charles, 13, with ex-husband Danny Mozes and Max, five, with wife Christine Marinoni - shot to fame playing lawyer Miranda Hobbes in the 'Sex and the City' TV series and two spin-off movies, and recently said she would like to make a third film.

She will next be seen in 'The Adderall Diaries' opposite James Franco and Amber Heard which is slated for release in April in the UK.
