Daniel Day Lewis made history at the Oscars last night as he became the first actor to win three Best Actor awards.

The Brit has already won for My Left Foot and There Will Be Blood and he was the red hot favourite going into the ceremony last night.

He saw off the challenge from High Jackman, Bradley Cooper, Denzel Washington and Joaquin Phoenix for his performance in Lincoln.

Collecting his award he said: "I really don't know how any of this happened.

"I do know that I have received so much more than my fair share of good fortune in my life, and I am so grateful to the Academy for this beautiful honour."

He also paid tribute to the other actors that were nominated alongside him.

"My fellow nominees, my equals, my betters, I am so proud to have been included as one amongst you."

Despite leading the nominations with twelve nods it was a disappointing night for Lincoln as it picked up just one other win for Production Design.
