Cumberbatch is set to take on the role of Doctor Strange for the first time this autumn as the first solo film for the character hits the big screen.

Doctor Strange is one of the new Marvel franchises to be introduced and will see Cumberbatch tackle a superhero film for the first time.

And while the character of Stephen Strange has a range of magical powers, Cumberbatch believes that it is the character's inner strength that makes him a superhero.

Speaking to EW about his character, the actor said: "This man reaches the very bottom and then more. You think, How much more can this guy take? He's broken, he gets up again, he's broken - and that's really what makes him a superhero.

"A lot of people have asked me, 'What makes him a superhero?' That's really the answer I should have given. It's not the Cloak of Levitation. It's not the Eye of Agamotto. It's about his staying power. It's a marathon and not a sprint. The guy endures so much."

The movie sees Cumberbatch team up with filmmaker Scott Derrickson for the first time as he makes his debut as a Marvel director.

Derrickson is no stranger to the director's chair with the likes of Sinister and Deliver Us From Evil under his belt. However, Doctor Strange will be the biggest film of his career to date.

The director has assembled an impressive cast list as Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tilda Swinton, Rachel McAdams, Mads Mikkelsen, and Benedict Wong all star alongside Cumberbatch.

As for Cumberbatch, he has also finished work on animated film Magik and will lend his voice the to the character of Shere Khan in Andy Serkis' adaptation of The Jungle Book.

The actor has also been working on the fourth series of Sherlock, which sees him reprise the role of Sherlock Holmes, alongside Martin Freeman.

Doctor Strange is released 28th October.
