Trainspotting will celebrate its twentieth anniversary next year - yes, it really was 1996 when the film hit the big screen. It marked the first time that McGregor teamed up with director Danny Boyle and the movie helped put both actor and director on the map.

McGregor took on the role of Renton in the film, and admits that he would be 'up for it' if the chance of a sequel ever arose.

Speaking to the press at the Edinburgh Film Festival, the actor said: "I think it might be extraordinary to see a sequel 20 years after the original. I would be up for it, I've said that to Danny.

"I haven't seen any script yet or anything and I don't know if there is one. There is a big idea that it might happen but I don't know that it is happening, I really don't."

McGregor admits that he was reluctant to do a sequel in the past but has changed his mind over the years.

He continued: "I just think I've changed my opinion about it. We've all moved on and there's a lot of water under the bridge. I miss working with Danny. I did some of my best work with him and he is, to date, one my favourite directors I've ever worked with because he's such a brilliant director."

McGregor is at the Edinburgh Film Festival to promote his new film Last Days in the Desert, which sees him play Jesus in an imagined chapter from his forty days of fasting in the desert.

Rodrigo García has penned the screenplay and is in the director's chair for the film, which received it's UK premiere at the festival.

As for McGregor, he has also completed work on Miles Ahead, Our Kind of Traitor, and Jane Got a Gun. He is currently working on a live action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast, in which he takes on the role of Lumiere.
