The film corporation company has silently dropped the sequel, which was scheduled for release in 2017, following the reboot's disappointing box office figures earlier this year.

However, it's not yet known if the film will eventually make it on to the big screen or whether plans to create the sequel in the near future have been axed permanently.

The abrupt news will no doubt come as a surprise to fans as producer Simon Kinberg seemed to be overly excited about the prospects of another movie during an interview this year.

He said prior to the release of 'Fantastic Four,' which hit the big screen in August, that Fox were still trying to "figure out" the next steps for the then-forthcoming film.

The rights to 'Fantastic Four' are currently being held by co-producers Constantin Film, whose deal with Marvel states their rights will revert back if another movie isn't produced by 2022, according to the Independent newspaper.

Meanwhile, director Josh Trank, 31, previously said he thought Kinberg's 2005 and 2007 adaptations of the comic book film - which starred Jessica Alba and Chris Evans - "weren't very good", and, for that reason, he understands why fans were sceptical about his interpretation, starring Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell.

He said just weeks before the release of the 2015 film: "I get the scepticism going into it because the previous movies weren't very good. It's a very hard title to crack."
