G.I. Joe is an iconic character, rising to popularity after the first ever film was released back in 1987, titled G. I. Joe: The Movie, and has had a few films follow in its wake. However, this year (2021) sees the origins of the classic character on the big screen.
Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins follows Snake Eyes (Henry Golding), a resilient loser, as he is welcomed into an ancient Japanese clan known as the Arashikage after saving the life of their heir apparent.
The clan then begin to teach Snake Eyes, so-called because he has such bad luck, how a ninja warrior fights, while also giving him what he’s been wanting his whole life: a home.
However, when Snake Eyes’ past catches up to him and secrets are revealed, the fighter’s honour and loyalty will be tested – which may come at the cost of those he loves.
The movie is based on the well-known G.I. Joe character, and promises a journey of action-packed fight scenes, amazing stunts, stunning shots, and a fantastic cast.
Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, along with Golding, stars Andrew Koji as Storm Shadow, Úrsula Corberó as Baroness, Samara Weaving as Scarlett, Haruka Abe as Akiko, Takehiro Hira as Kenta and Iko Uwais as Hard Master.
The final trailer, which is available to watch now on YouTube, shows tenacity, hardship and willpower as Snake Eyes fights for not only his life, but his honour and dignity, not to mention the lives of those he holds close.
It seems we will get to know the history of the Arashikage, and witness the story that fans have been waiting for. The trailer, while appealing to loyal fans of the franchise, is also likely to draw attention from new fans, as it is an origin story many others can join in the narrative and be engulfed in this brilliant movie.
The martial arts within this film will of course be in the spotlight and, from the trailer, we can see exceptionally coordinated sequences showcasing Snake Eyes’ skills and tenacity; if the trailer shows this much incredible action, we can only bet that the movie will have much more in store for fans.
Joe Deckelmeier from Screen Rant has dubbed this movie ‘the origin story we’ve been waiting for’, as well as stating the upcoming feature to be ‘a wildly entertaining thrill ride’, while Laura Sirkul from The Nerds of Colour has claimed it to be ‘a whole new kind of action movie’.
Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins will be in cinemas August 18th, 2021!
