Adapting a screenplay written by Beau Willimon, Rourke’s film Mary, Queen of Scots will be produced by Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner of Working Title, along with Debra Hayward; all of three of which were nominated for Academy Awards following their work as producers on Les Misérables.

Jack Lowden, Joe Alwyn, Martin Compston, Brendan Coyle, David Tennant and Guy Pearce all also star in the movie, which will explore the turbulent and chaotic life of Mary Stuart.

Becoming the Queen of France at 16-years-old and then becoming a widow at just 18, Mary defies the pressure on her to remarry, instead returning to her native home of Scotland to reclaim her throne. There, she’ll face a battle of power with Elizabeth I, who rules over both England and Scotland, but with a determination to rule as more of a figurehead, Mary asserts her claim to the throne and threatens Elizabeth I’s sovereignty.

With betrayal, rebellion and conspiracies around every corner, the course of history could be changed forever as the chaos within each court puts both thrones in peril.

Peter Kujawski, chairman at Focus comments: “We are privileged to be collaborating with our partners at Working Title on this stellar production, and with Josie as she makes this exciting move from stage to screen work. With two of today’s most vital actresses bringing to life two female titans, Mary, Queen of Scots will be one of the movie events of 2018.”

Mary, Queen of Scots will hit cinemas next year; we’ll bring you more news about the movie as and when we get it.
