Ryan Reynolds will reprise his titular role as the irreverent superhero while director Tim Miller is returning to helm the project following the success of the first film, which has become the highest-grossing R-rated film in box office history after netting almost $760 million at the box office.

Writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, are also on board to pen the new script.

Fox co-CEOs Stacey Snider and Jim Gianopulos confirmed the sequel at CinemaCon 2016 in Las Vegas on Thursday (14.04.16).

It was previously speculated that the sequel will start filming later this year, with a release date of late 2017 or early 2018, but this has not yet been confirmed.

It is unclear if Ryan's co-stars Morena Baccarin, T.J. Miller and Karan Soni will return for the second movie, however time-travelling mutant Cable - Deadpool's friend and foe in the comic books - may feature in the follow-up film.

'Deadpool' producer Simon Kinberg previously said: "I think there are some stories that could be R-rated. I don't know what they are, I mean I think the mainline X-Men movies have their own tone, which is a more operatic tone. It's more dramatic, it is more PG-13 in a way. 'X-Force' I could see being R-rated, and who knows?"
