Hayley Atwell was "so nervous" making 'Captain America: The First Avenger' she "became uptight".

British actress Hayley Atwell played the lead female role in the 2011 Marvel superhero movie alongside Chris Evans - and she admits the experience was daunting because it was her first big Hollywood blockbuster.

She explained: "[Co-star] Stanley Tucci, who I'm now really good friends with, said that when he first met me on the set of 'Captain America' he thought I had no sense of humour. I said, 'Are you kidding? I was shitting myself!' I was so nervous I just became uptight."

Although the 31-year-old beauty has been acting for many years, she thinks her thirties and forties will be when she does her best work on the big screen.

She told Time Out magazine: "I think my decades will be my thirties and forties. I'm meant to be an older actor rather than a teen or a twenties starlet. I didn't feel comfortable with the pursuit of that. I wanted to know who I was as a human being first."

Atwell also insists she doesn't have a long-term plan for her film career and considers roles as and when they are offered to her.

She said: "I don't have a plan. I don't have a set of characters I want to play. I want to discover as I go along and take each step as it comes."
