Ian McShane has revealed he thinks Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was the perfect actor to take on the role of greek hero Hercules in the Brett Ratner directed film of the same name.

Former wrestler Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson portrays Hercules in Brett Ratner's big-screen adaptation of the Radical Studios graphic novel, and McShane - who plays part seer, part warrior Amphiaraus - thinks no one else could have done the role justice.

He told Steve Wright on BBC Radio 2: "Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson plays Hercules. Well who else are you going to get to play Hercules? It has to be Mr Muscles."

Although McShane, 71, enjoyed working on the movie, he admitted it was "a long slog".

He explained: "They did most of the special effects afterwards but it was 19 weeks, there were six cameras on each of us. It was a long slog this one.

"A lot of it was fun, I like Brett Ratner, he's crazy but it was a long shoot."

The movie - which portrays Hercules not as the son of Greek god Zeus but rather as a mortal mercenary - also stars Joseph Fiennes, John Hurt, Rebecca Ferguson and supermodel Irina Shayk, who makes her acting debut as Hercules' love interest.
