Elba triumphed on Saturday night as he walked away from with the Best Supporting Actor award for his stunning performance in the movie.

It was one of two awards that Elba won on the night; he also won Best Actor in a Miniseries for Luther.

Speaking on stage as he collected his Best Supporting Actor award, Elba said: "I want to tell you, man, we made a film about real people and real lives.

"To be awarded for it is very special, because a lot of people were damaged through that. So thank you for giving this film some respect and love."

Elba was in a loaded Best Supporting Actor category alongside Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies), Christian Bale (The Big Short), Michael Shannon (99 Homes), and Jacob Tremblay (Room). It was one of the most wide-open categories of the night.

Elba's win comes after a whirlwind of Oscar controversy that saw all twenty acting nominations go to white actors for the second year in a row.

Beasts of No Nation was the first feature film by TV channel Netflix and saw Elba team up with director Cary Fukunaga. The movie is based on the book of the same name by Uzodinma Iweala and follows a young boy who survives the horrors of war.

The movie was also nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture but lost out to Spotlight.

As for Elba, we are going to be seeing plenty of him on the big screen this year as he has already completed work on Star Trek Beyond, A Hundred Streets, and Bastille Day.

The actor is also lending his voice to animation movie Zootropolis and the character of Shere Khan in a new adaptation of The Jungle Book, which sees the actor work with filmmaker Jon Favreau.
