Iron Man 3 has swept to the top of the U.S. box office with an opening weekend gross of $175.3 million.

the latest instalment of the popular Iron Man franchise has the second biggest opening weekend gross of all time - behind last summer's Avengers Assemble.

Robert Downey Jr is back in the title role and the movie has so far taken a massive $678 million worldwide.

Pain & Gain could only hold onto the #1 spot for a single week as it dropped just one place to two.

The movie was no match for the power of Iron Man 3 as it grossed just $7.6 million.

42 was a none mover at three while Oblivion dropped two places this week from two to four.

The Croods also stayed put at five while comedy The Big Wedding was a two place faller down at nine.

Mud was one of the movies that moved up this week as it jumped up four places from eleven to seven. Oz The Great and Powerful was also back in the top ten as it was up from thirteen to eight.

Scary Movie 5 was down two at nine while The Place Beyond The Pines dropped just a single place to round off the top ten.
