Jack The Giant Slayer

Jack The Giant Slayer has stormed to the top of the U.S. box office as it toppled Identity Thief from the top spot.

The movie marks the return to the director's chair for Bryan Singer as he brings his take on the story of Jack and the Beanstalk to the big screen.

The movie took $28 million in its opening weekend to comfortably overtake Identity Thief and snatch the top spot.

This is the second #1 movie for actor Nicholas Hoult in just a handful of weeks as Warm Bodies also opened at number one.

Identity Thief returned to the top spot last week for a second stint at #1 but slid just a single place this week to number two.

21 and Over was the second new entry inside the top three this week as the comedy opened at number three.

And it was all about the new entry at the top of the box office as The Last Exorcism Part II was new at four.

Dwayne Johnson's new film Snitch was down three this week at number five while animation film Escape From Planet Earth was also down three at six.

Safe Haven, which is the latest of Nicholas Sparks' novels to be adapted for the big screen also suffered a three place fall at seven while Silver Linings Playbook was down just one at eight.

A Good Day To Die Hard and Dark Skies were this week's biggest fallers as they both dropped four spots to round off the chart at nine and ten.
