Jennifer Lawrence picked up the Best Actress award and was able to laugh off her trip up the steps to collect her award.
Lawrence picked up the gong for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook but stumbled up the steps.
"Thank you! These guys are just standing up because they feel bad that I fell, and it's really embarrassing! This is nuts.
"Thank you to the Academy and to the women... not just those in my category, you've been so nice and this has been unforgettable."
Lawrence had already picked up the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild for her performance in the film and she and Jessica Chastain were tipped to go head to head for the award.
This was the second Oscar nomination of Lawrence's career after being nominated in this category for Winter's Bone.
She saw off the challenge from Chastain, Emmanuelle Riva, Naomi Watts and Quvenzhané Wallis.
Silver Linings Playbook was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Director for David O. Russell and Best Actor for Bradley Cooper but missed out.
