Josh Hartnett has revealed that he turned down chances to play Spider-Man, Batman and Superman.

Hartnett was offered the trio of superhero roles during the early days of his career, but saw the 'danger' of those parts and movies.

Speaking to Details, he said: "Spider-Man was something we talked about. Batman was another one.

"But I somehow knew those roles had potential to define me, and I didn't want that.

"I didn't want to be labelled as Superman for the rest of my career. I was maybe 22, but I saw the danger."

Hartnett's next project will see him move to the small screen with new supernatural drama Penny Dreadful.

The show will begin in the UK next month, and will see him star alongside Eva Green, Timothy Dalton and Rory Kinnear.

John Logan is behind the series, which will bring together some of horror literature's most famous characters, such as Frankenstein and Dorian Gray.
