The 'Penny Dreadful' actor is in talks to take on the role of the former leader of a mercenary outfit in the indie espionage thriller, which will start filming in Italy in March 2017, Deadline reports.

Josh's character Jack was shot and left for dead during an operation in Africa. In the movie he returns to Naples to reunite with the love of his life and "right past wrongs".

The movie will be directed by Guy Moshe and produced by Mark Holdom, Moshe and Matthew G. Zamias. Nigel Smart and Harris Tulchin will executive produce.

It's a busy time for Josh, who has also opened talks to star in independent drama 'A Moment to Remember', which will be directed by Ben Lewin.

Lewin - whose previous work includes 2012's 'The Sessions' and 1991 film 'The Favour, the Watch, and the Very Big Fish' - has penned the screenplay with 'Erin Brockovich' writer Susannah Grant and the plot follows a young woman who falls in love with a sweet down-to-earth guy.

The couple marry but then their relationship is wrecked when she develops a rare case of early-onset Alzheimer's leaving her man to care for her as the condition takes hold.

Jena Malone was cast in the project back in May as the female lead and if Hartnett, 38, accepts the role he will portray the husband.

The movie is being financed by Sobini Films and Scott Lambert and Mark Amin are producing.

Shooting on the project is scheduled to begin in November.

Hartnett's role as Ethan Chandler in 'Penny Dreadful' has come to an end after the TV series was axed after three seasons.

Hartnett's next big screen role is as an Olympic hockey player in Scott Waugh's '6 Below' and he is also starring opposite Charlotte Rampling and John Rhys-Davies in Lech Majewski's sci-fi movie 'Valley of the Gods'.
