Julia Roberts has described working on August: Osage County as 'challenging'.

Roberts will return to the big screen this week as she plays Meryl Streep's daughter in the adaptation of the Tracy Letts play.

And while Roberts admits that she was expecting it to be a challenging role, she didn't think it would that tough.

Speaking to the Press Association, the actress said: "It was just so hard. I knew it would be a great challenge, which was very appealing, but I didn't realise how continuously challenging it would be throughout filming," she said.

"I had seen the play, which... was three-and-a-half hours of being pummelled, it was amazing."

"Most days, I think we were just exhausted. And it really is the benefit of the hard work that is always the next day's work. There was never any time to talk about or to examine the day's events."

And while it may have been hard going for Roberts, it was worth it as she has picked up a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for her performance.

August: Osage County is the first big screen outing for Roberts since Mirror Mirror, as she joins the ensemble cast that includes Meryl Streep, Ewan McGregor, Sam, Shepard, Abigail Breslin and Benedict Cumberbatch.

August: Osage County is released 24th January.
