Julianne Hough admits that she would love to do a wide range or roles - using Jennifer Lawrence as an example of an actress who has moved successfully between different genres.

The actress returned to the big screen last week with romance movie Safe Haven, the latest Nicholas Sparks book to be adapted for the big screen.

But Hough is not content with starring in just one particular kind of film and is looking to spread her wings.

Speaking to the Press Association the actress said: "There is so much more to me, I'd just love to have the shot and the opportunity to do that or to even discover things in my own self that I don't realise I have because I haven't had the opportunity.

"Jennifer Lawrence is like super hot right now and is a super example of doing credible indies and then a big box office thing like Hunger Games.

"There's so much range and that's what I aspire to be. Meryl Streep has played many different characters and it's not about how dark you can go or how funny you can be, it's just different and versatile."

Safe Haven saw Hough team up with actor Josh Duhamel and director Lasse Hallström - working with both of them for the first time.

Paradise is her next movie and that sees her work with Diablo Cody, who has penned the screenplay and is in the director's chair.

Paradise is a comedy project for the actress and also stars Octavia Spencer and Holly Hunter.

Safe Haven is out now.
