Jurassic World

The highly anticipated film hit the big screen over the weekend and has dominated the global box office - smashing records as it has gone along.

While the movie didn't quite break the U.S opening weekend domestic record set by Avengers Assemble - although it did come awfully close - worldwide it has been a total smash - despite some lukewarm reviews.

After just one weekend on release, the movie is already the fifth highest grossing movie of the year and looks set to become the third film to break $1 billion so far this year.

Jurassic World is the fourth film in the popular dinosaur series and the first since Jurassic Park III back in 2001. Colin Trevorrow is in the director's chair of the franchise for the first time, while Steven Spielberg served as an executive producer.

So far, only two movies have hit $1 billion and they come in the form of Fast & Furious 7 and Avengers: Age of Ultron. The films are currently the fourth and fifth biggest films of all time - with Fast 7 moving in on Avengers Assemble in third.

It was back in 1993 when Jurassic Park hit the big screen for the first tie and the movie went on to gross in excess of $900 million by the end of its theatrical run. It was the highest grossing film of all time until Titanic came along.

As for Jurassic World is could easily break the record as the quickest film to gross $1 billion - a record currently held by Fast & Furious 7 at twelve days.

It also looks like Jurassic World may put Fast & Furious 7's position of highest grossing film of 2015 so far under threat.

Jurassic World is out now.
