Split has helped M. Night Shyamalan work his way back into the spotlight for all the right reasons, receiving some brilliant critical reviews and also becoming a great commercial success, grossing $112.5 million across the world despite spending just a $9 million budget.

James McAvoy in Split

Starring James McAvoy in the lead, this psychological horror film follows three teenagers who are captured by McAvoy’s character Kevin Wendell Crumb – one of just 23 split personalities the actor inhabits.

Variety’s Peter Debruge said of the movie: “There are plenty of proper twists to follow, none more unexpected than the fact that Shyamalan himself has managed to get his groove back after a slew of increasingly atrocious misfires.”

Screen Rant’s Sandy Schaefer adds: “Split is the best M. Night Shyamalan creation in recent memory, as anchored by a great performance (or, rather, performances) by James McAvoy.”

With a huge twist ending (that we won’t give away!), there was always every chance a Split sequel could be in the works, and now Shyamalan seems to have confirmed that is the case.

Taking to his Twitter account to tease the process he’s already gone through for the follow-up to the newly-release flick, he wrote:

It’s great news to hear that Shyamalan will be delving right back into the world of Split, but he’s got an incredible challenge ahead of him if he wants to replicate the success of the original. Hopefully, assuming McAvoy will be back on board, it will be a release all fans of the movie will be blessed to see come to fruition.

Split is available now in cinemas in the UK and theaters in the US.
