The first Maleficent: Mistress of Evil trailer has landed, and it's got the hairs on our arms standing to attention! Angelina Jolie returns in the titular role following the huge success of the first live-action Maleficent movie, with Elle Fanning also making her return as Princess Aurora. The incomparable Michelle Pfeiffer also joins the cast this time round, taking on the role of Queen Ingrith; an adversary to Jolie's Maleficent.

Picking up several years after the events of the first flick, audiences will revisit this land of mystery and magic after learning just why the heart of Disney's most notorious villain became so hardened. The relationship between Maleficent and Princess Aurora is one that will continue to be explored, whilst new alliances and opponents will make themselves known.

It looks as if Maleficent is leaning ever further into her role as a villain in the new movie, but as we discovered with the first, there are likely going to be events and actions made by others which allow us to sympathise with the iconic character.

Joachim Rønning serves as director on the film, working on a story from Linda Woolverton and a screenplay Woolverton co-wrote with Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster. Joe Roth, Angelina Jolie and Duncan Henderson are producers, with Matt Smith, Michael Vieira and Jeff Kirschenbaum all serving as executive producers.

Fans took to Twitter, excited to get their first glimpse of the film and looking forward to checking it out when it drops later this year:

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil comes to cinemas across the UK on October 18, 2019.
