Marion Cotillard is to play Lady Macbeth.
The Oscar-winning French actress has been snapped up to play the headstrong leading lady opposite Michael Fassbender, who is currently in the mix for the role of the iconic anti-hero, in Justin Kurzel's movie adaptation of Shakespeare's 'Macbeth', according to Deadline.
Natalie Portman - who has considered several stage productions of the tragedy in the past - had previously been in the running to play the scheming wife of the Scottish nobleman in the new adaptation from See Saw Films, but Cotillard won the part.
The film will be a co-production between See Saw's Iain Canning and Emile Sherman and Film4, who previously collaborated on Steve McQueen's 'Shame', which earned Fassbender critical acclaim and a BAFTA nomination.
Cotillard - who is known for her role in 'The Dark Knight Rises' - will have to get to grips with Shakespearean dialogue as it was previously revealed the film will be very close to the original text.
'Macbeth', often considered one of Shakespeare's darkest but best works, tells the story of a ruthless Scottish lord who overthrows the king with help from his devious wife and three witches.
